Appledore EX39 1 (22 miles) – A beautiful small fishing village on the River Torridge with winding narrow streets, colourful houses and a museum. Author and poet Charles Kingsley described it as a “Little white fishing village”.
Barnstaple EX32 7 (11 miles) – North Devon’s historical capital on the River Taw offers the historic Pannier Market, an acclaimed modern shopping precinct and many brand names in the High Street shops, banks, restaurants, tea rooms, cinema and the Queens Theatre, ten pin bowling, go karting, soft play centres, etc. From the station there is a delightful train journey through beautiful countryside to Exeter and beyond to Exmouth.
Bideford EX39 3 (20 miles) – This small market town has an historic port and quay on the River Torridge from which the MS Oldenburg carries holidaymakers and day trippers to nearby Lundy Island. The magnificent stone bridge crossing the river dates back to 1535. In one of the town’s narrow back streets will be found the historic Pannier Market.
Bude EX23 8 (45 miles) – Just inside Cornwall, this small seaside town has a choice of wonderful sandy beaches and a sea pool for safe swimming. The beaches are favoured by surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers. The Castle Bude is a favourite tourist attraction for families.
Clovelly EX39 5 (31 miles) – Set into a steep hillside, this is one of the most famous villages in the world. It has a single cobbled street that winds its way down the hillside to a wonderful little historic harbour with its quaint pub. No cars are allowed in the village but there is a land rover service that will take tourists to the harbour by another route.
Exeter EX1 1 (52 miles) – The historic capital city of Devon features numerous historic buildings, including the beautiful cathedral, but also benefits from a great modern shopping centre.
Hartland Peninsula EX39 6 (36 miles) – This area is a walker’s paradise with rugged cliffs at Hartland Point with its lighthouse. The historic Hartland Quay with its fine public house is also nearby. Speke’s Mill Mouth is a 20 minute’s walk along the coast from Hartland Quay where a 150’ high waterfall plunges to the beach. The beautiful Hartland Abbey and Gardens is also close by.
Ilfracombe EX34 8 (4 miles) – A town that prides itself on its Victorian heritage with numerous wonderful Victorian buildings. It is particularly known for its delightful harbour and quay, promenade, pleasure gardens, Tunnels Beaches, cinema and the Landmark Theatre. The artist Damien Hirst features his spectacular and unique sculpture of Verity on the quayside. Fishing trips and pleasure cruises may be taken from the harbour and the MS Oldenburg carries holidaymakers and day trippers to nearby Lundy Island, the National Trust wildlife haven. There is a great variety of hotels, restaurants, public houses and tea rooms to suit all tastes.
Instow EX39 4 (21 miles) – This is a beautiful little seaside village with a lovely sandy beach. There is a ferry service for foot passengers that links the village to Appledore on the opposite side of the river. A short distance outside the village is the delightful Tapeley Park Gardens.
Lynton/ or Lynmouth EX35 6 (13 miles) – A spellbinding drive through the Exmoor National Park and the Valley of the Rocks along the coastal route will bring the holidaymaker to the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth. Lynton at the top of the hill, and Lynmouth at the bottom of the hill, are linked by the spectacular and historic Cliff Railway that takes foot passengers down the steep hill. Iconic sea views are enjoyed from Lynton. There is a beach, an arts and craft centre, the Pavilion, cinema, numerous eating venues and great public houses. The glorious National Trust’s Watersmeet is just outside Lynmouth, as is the iconic Woody Bay railway.
South Molton EX36 4 (19 miles) – This historic market town boasts a Pannier Market and a museum. Quince Honey farm is just outside the town, as is the Rock and Rapid Adventure Centre at Hacche Mill. The beautifully situated Stags Head Inn and Castle Hill Estate’s Gardens are situated in nearby Filleigh.
Tiverton EX16 6 (37 miles) – This market town is the main commercial and administrative centre of the Mid Devon District. Its location on the Rivers Lowman and Exe made it famous for its woollen industry but it is now well known for its lace. It boasts a castle and a museum that features Mid Devon Life. The tranquil Grand Western Canal is nearby at the Moorings, Canal Hill from where tourists can enjoy a trip aboard a horse drawn canal barge along the canal. The Devon Railway Centre is nearby.
